The Carson Valley -- Minden and Gardnerville

The Carson Valley is one of the earliest-settled, richest, and most productive of the state's agricultural regions. In spring, summer and autumn, the valley's pastoral heritage is in its full glory, with a green patchwork quilt of irrigated and mown fields, framed by steep mountains. Grazing cattle, sheep and horses can be found in lush pastures. It's two main towns, Minden and Gardnerville, have grown together over the past 150 years, but each retains its heritage and history in the architecture of the downtown areas.Although only 40 miles south of Reno and 15 miles east of Lake Tahoe, both communities nestled in this visually spectacular valley have convenient access to medical care through Carson Valley Medical Center, and extensive professional services and shopping within their communities, and endless recreational opportunities with local golf courses, parks, rivers, bike, hiking and equestrian trails.
Gardnerville was established in the 1860s to serve the agricultural population, the presence of US 395 elongated the town, with the Gardnerville Ranchos to the south, and most of the business enterprises facing the highway. Lampe Park, the city's sprawling recreation complex is the site of the annual Carson Valley Days, is also located south of town, and serves as a hub of activity for organized community sports, with tennis courts, ball fields and playgrounds.
Minden adjoins Gardnerville to the north, and is Nevada's first planned community, a picturesque turn-of-the-century town established when the V & T Railroad arrived. Complete with town square, a grid of residential streets became the nexus for a growing community at the intersection of three of the most scenic highways in the west. Minden is also the county seat for Douglas County, which encompasses South Lake Tahoe, and the historic community of Genoa. Douglas County High School and the area's state-of-the-art aquatic facility are located on the northern edge of the town.
